The program is currently available via Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals, Keyboards and Singer-Songwriter pathways.

The program is validated by the University of Wolverhampton and equivalent to the first 2 years of a BA(hons).

The FD (Arts) Music Performance can help to prepare you for a career as a musical performer, music teacher, music journalist, band manager and session musician.

How long is it?

You can choose to study full-time (4 x 12 week semesters studied over 2 years) or part-time (6 x 12 week semesters studied over 3 years)

Who is it for?

The FD (Arts) Music Performance is ideal if you wish to progress your studies from a BTEC Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma 
in Music and/or ‘A’ level studies in a performing arts or related subjects.
The primary focus of the FD in performance is to develop technical excellence and the mastery of your chosen instrument. You should already be a confident, skilled performer, ideally able to sight-read musical notation and/or TAB, improvise competently and adapt to a range of musical genres. Prior experience of public performance would be an advantage.

Entry requirements?

100 UCAS points from ‘A’ levels or equivalent / BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music (PPP
 or above) / BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Music (MP or above)
For applicants with relevant prior experience, FAST TRACK entry into the second year of the FD or the AMSonline BA(hons) program is possible. Please contact our team for further information.

What subjects will I study?

Advanced Instrumental Studies

These vital core classes are devoted to the pursuit of technical excellence on your chosen instrument. You will be assigned a specialist instrumental teacher whose role is to liaise with you on a regular basis, monitor your progress, give you technical advice and recommendations for improvement.

Genre Studies Chart Prep

These lessons are designed to give you practical experience of playing different musical genres. Each week, you will learn classic popular songs from the 1950s to the present day giving you exposure to a diverse range of music and related technique.

Style Analysis

You will learn in detail about different genres of music in order to inform your musical decisions.

Creative Music Technology

To ensure you understand the technical and artistic parameters of the studies, these lessons will give you the technical know-how to record your own songs, as well as create authentic music productions in a range of popular music styles .

Entrepreneurship

To succeed in the music business, you need to be an entrepreneur. During your studies, you will learn how to network with local music businesses and write a business plan for your future career.

Professional Work Project

You will work as a member of a team to both organise and participate in a performance at a live venue to a targeted audience.

Performance Repertoire

Under the guidance of your tutor, you will embark on a self-directed programme of research and development on your instrument in order to explore unfamiliar performance genres, concepts, repertoires and practices.

Teaching Music

Knowing how to teach is an incredibly valuable asset to any working musician, helping you to maintain a sustainable and enjoyable living from your passion. You will learn how to develop your own curriculum, teach in an effective way, and form the basis of a viable teaching business.

Entrepreneurship

What happens next?

Following successful completion, you may progress on to a BA (Hons) Top-Up Degree course.

Fees and Funding

Fees prt academic year are £5995 per annum full time (2 years) and £3995 per annum part time (3 years).

Subject to eligibility you can apply for a student loan to cover fees.
