My Background

Villy Karagouni holds PhD and MA in English Literature, Culture & Theory (University of Glasgow) and BA in English Language, Literature & Culture (University of Athens). She studied classical piano, music theory, harmony, and choral performance for twelve years at the Athens Conservatoire followed by a further two-year study at the Attiko Conservatoire and private lessons up to post-grade 8 level piano.
She started performing with pop-rock bands in her native Athens at age 18. As piano/keys player and/or vocalist she has performed and recorded with numerous artists including Ophelia’s Garden (Athens), Louise Rutkowski (Glasgow), Lola in Slacks (Glasgow), as well as cover bands. She is a songwriter/vocalist/piano player for Vast Blue Veil (Glasgow).
Villy has been working in Higher Education for a total of eleven years (University of Glasgow: 2011-19; Academy of Music & Sound: 2013-present). Her areas of specialism are: Cultural Studies; English Language; English Literature; Classical and Contemporary Music Performance and Composition; HE Administration; BA Course Coordination; Student Support including ASN; Widening Participation; Counselling Skills (SCQF Level 8). Villy’s most recent academic research has focused on music-narrative relationships and been published in an edited volume by Palgrave Macmillan (Sep 2020). She is currently exploring improvisation-empathy relationships with view to publication.
